A Day in the Life of an Offshore Engineer at Weyres Offshore

At Weyres Offshore, our commitment to protecting the ocean while advancing green energy starts with the people behind the scenes. Today, we dive into the daily life of one of our dedicated engineers, Gregor, who works on the front lines of our noise mitigation efforts during offshore wind park construction. His work ensures that marine life is safeguarded while renewable energy projects move forward, helping to create a sustainable future.

Starting the Day at Sea

Gregor spends 40% of his year offshore, often deployed on vessels for up to eight weeks at a time. Early mornings aboard the vessel begin with a safety briefing—a routine that’s not just a formality, but a fundamental part of Weyres Offshore’s culture. “Out here, safety is everything,” Gregor explains. “Every step we take is designed to protect both the crew and the environment we’re working in.”

As an Offshore Mechanical Systems Expert, Gregor is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of the Big Bubble Curtain—a system that drastically reduces the underwater noise generated during offshore wind turbine installation. His role involves inspecting the diesel generators and compressors that power the system, ensuring everything runs smoothly for the day’s activities.

Challenges and Rewards

“The work is demanding,” Gregor admits. “You’re out here in all kinds of weather, and the equipment can be as temperamental as the sea. But at the end of the day, I know that the work we’re doing is making a real difference.”

Deploying and operating the Big Bubble Curtain requires a combination of technical expertise and physical endurance. Gregor and his team spend hours on deck, securing hoses, checking power connections, and managing the complex systems that keep the noise barrier functioning properly. His day involves not just technical work but also constant communication with the crew to coordinate efforts and ensure everything goes according to plan.

Protecting the Ocean, One Day at a Time

For Gregor, the most rewarding part of his job is knowing that his work directly contributes to protecting marine life. “We’re not just building wind farms. We’re making sure that dolphins and whales can still communicate and navigate in these waters,” he says. “It’s easy to forget how much noise humans bring to the ocean, and how devastating that can be for marine animals. Our job is to minimize that impact as much as possible.”

This commitment to marine conservation is what motivates Gregor through long offshore deployments and complex mechanical challenges. He knows that each successful project brings us closer to a future where clean energy and environmental protection go hand in hand.

Looking Forward

When he’s not offshore, Gregor spends his time preparing for the next deployment, conducting maintenance checks on equipment, and staying up to date on the latest advancements in noise mitigation technology. “The work is always evolving,” he explains. “Weyres Offshore is constantly looking for ways to improve the technology and make it even more effective. That’s why I love working here—it’s all about innovation and making a real difference.”

As Gregor wraps up another day aboard the vessel, he looks forward to seeing the results of his team’s work: a quieter ocean, teeming with life, powered by renewable energy.

In the future, I want my kids to see these wind farms and know that we helped build them in a way that protects the ocean. That’s something I’m proud of.

At Weyres Offshore, our engineers like Gregor are the heartbeat of our mission to create a sustainable future. By pioneering innovative solutions like the Big Bubble Curtain, they ensure that renewable energy can be developed in harmony with nature, leaving a cleaner, quieter ocean for generations to come.
