Success Stories in Offshore Noise Mitigation

Offshore wind energy projects are essential for transitioning to renewable energy sources, but they face the challenge of mitigating underwater noise pollution. WEYRES-OFFSHORE has emerged as a leader in this field, providing innovative solutions that ensure the protection of marine life while facilitating sustainable energy development. Here, we explore two notable success stories: the Sunrise Wind and South Fork Wind projects.

South Fork Wind Project: Pioneering Sustainable Practices

The South Fork Wind project, another significant offshore wind initiative, recently reached full operational status. Located off the coast of Long Island, New York, this project features 12 wind turbines with a total capacity of 130 MW, enough to power 70,000 homes. Weyres Offshore’s Big Bubble Curtain system was used during its construction to effectively reduce noise levels by up to 90%, showcasing its efficiency and reliability  .

This noise reduction was critical in safeguarding the local marine environment, ensuring that construction activities did not disrupt the natural habitat of marine species. The success of the South Fork Wind project underscores the importance of incorporating advanced noise mitigation techniques in offshore wind projects to meet both environmental and operational goals.

Sunrise Wind Project: A Landmark in Renewable Energy

The Sunrise Wind project, located approximately 30 miles off the coast of Montauk, New York, is set to become one of the largest offshore wind farms in the United States. This ambitious project has a planned capacity of 924 megawatts (MW) and is expected to generate enough renewable energy to power nearly 600,000 homes upon completion in 2026. The project will feature up to 84 wind turbine generators spread across a lease area of 109,952 acres   .

Weyres Offshore’s Big Bubble Curtain technology played a crucial role in mitigating underwater noise during the construction phase. This innovative technology creates a barrier of bubbles around the construction site, significantly reducing the underwater noise generated during pile driving and other activities. The reduction in noise is essential for protecting marine mammals and other sea life from the harmful effects of noise pollution, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

The Sunrise Wind project is not only a milestone in renewable energy but also a significant economic driver, creating about 800 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs in New York. It represents a $700 million investment in Suffolk County alone.

The Broader Impact of Weyres Offshore’s Solutions

Weyres Offshore’s innovative noise mitigation solutions are not limited to individual projects but have broader applications across the offshore wind industry. Their Big Bubble Curtain technology exemplifies how engineering ingenuity can address environmental challenges, paving the way for sustainable offshore energy development.

The company’s commitment to protecting marine ecosystems while supporting the expansion of renewable energy highlights the crucial role of noise mitigation in achieving a balance between technological progress and ecological stewardship. As offshore wind energy continues to grow, the need for effective noise mitigation solutions like those provided by Weyres Offshore will become increasingly vital.
